Krynica Zdrój
Krynica is a beautiful mountain town located 600 m above sea level in the valley of the Kryniczanka and Palenica Rivers.
It is famous for its importance as a health resort and for its many sources of mineral spring water. Krynica has many spa treatment clinics and sanatoriums.
Apart from those people who are prescribed treatment in Krynica by their doctors there is an increasingly wide offer for business people and tourists who want to use the spa for leisure, relaxation or just to revive their feelings of well being.
For some years now Krynica has been an all year round center for summer and winter sports and walking or biking in the surrounding mountains and valleys.
The town is located on the site of the village of Krzynycze which was established there around 1547. The beginnings of the town as a spa date from the XVIII c. Józef Dietl, the professor at Jagiellon University, is the father of Polish balneology and because of him Krynica became famous as one of the most important spa towns in Poland.
After WWI investment in the town increased and it became even more popular especially among the celebrities of those times. Krynica is also famous for the many spring water sources which are drunk here.
The water (each source has a different name) contains different minerals and each source differs in taste and in the treatment it can be used for. Every visit to the spa either begins or ends in the rather monumental Main Pump Hall for a cup of mineral water such as the popular Jan and Józef water or the very specific sulphur taste of the Zuber spring. Since 1997 a great attraction is the lane to Jaworzyna peak located several kilometers from the center of the town.
Krynica is slowly beginning to compete with Zakopane attracting many visitors in winter and summer.
Why not join them? One full day and a stroll around the town is enough time to visit the most important attractions.
Let's start with The Nikifor museum, Parkowa Hill, along the town's main pedestrian street and of course the mineral springs where a spring water cup amongst other souvenirs can be bought.
So, let's explore Krynica!

1. The Borowine Baths
The Borowine Baths were built in 1881 and with the neighboring Old Peat Baths are the oldest buildings in the town in the very specific Krynica style. In the early days of its popularity they were the most modern and well-equipped spa facilities in Krynica.
The modernization of 1962 changed the original shape of the building and its walls were plastered over, a first floor was added and the interiors were renovated. The Baths are now known as the Natural Curing Facility.

2. The Main Pump Hall
The two-storied Main Pump Hall was built in 1971 on the site of an older wooden building. It is open every day from 06.30 till 18.00.
Each of the mineral water distribution pumps has a name written above it. Water is poured into plastic cups or into special wooden cups which can be purchased in souvenirs shops (ground floor).
One cup of water costs 1,65 zł (a carnet for 10 cups 11,50 zł).
Water can be warmed up in a special bowl filled with hot water and then drunk slowly while walking.
Inside the hall there is a concert hall, many souvenirs shops, toilets and occasional exhibits of artistic work.

3. The Old Spa House
The Old Spa House was built in 1889. After its construction it became known as the most splendid house in Krynica and till 1939 it was called The New Spa House.
It changed its name when a new house was opened to the public further up on the other side of the street. Here you can buy the Mieczysław spring water. The building has a ballroom, restaurant with cafeteria and about 200 places where guests can spend the night.

4. The Museum of art
Krynica is famous for the art of Nikifor. This street painter, analphabet, a man with a serious speaking handicap (he was not able to speak properly due to mouth and tongue deformation) produced thousands of paintings which today are recognized as primitivism art. Nikifor, his real name Epifan Dworniak (1895-1968) was misunderstood for many years. People derided and pitied him but over the years his work became recognized, became popular and he became quite wealthy though he did very little with his money.
He spent most of his time in the pedestrian streets in Krynica selling his paintings.
Today his paintings are presented in the Romanówka villa, the Museum of Art, Dietl Boulevard behind the Old Spa House, tel. +48 18 471 53 03, open 10.00-13.00, 14.00-17.00 - closed on Mondays.
Adult tickets 6 zł, reduced 4 zł. Apart from the work of Nikifor and his photographs and personal belongings there are often other artists on exhibition. Reserve about one hour.

5. Pijalnia
The Jan Pump House is picturesquely located beside Parkowa Hill.
Open 6.30-09.00; 10.00-13.00; 15.30-18.00 it offers the two popular and tasty Jan and Józef waters (the second only available here) - one cup 1,65 zł, 10 cups carnet 11,50 zł.
The 1880 Józef source is named after Dr Józef Menurowicz, who dedicated his life to the development of Krynica.
The Jan source is named after an employee of the spa facility who used to give water to pensioners from an unknown and not authorized source yet. Today there are two kinds of water distributed in one hall.

6. The Park Hill
The Góra Parkowa (Park Hill) has a trolley car which will take you up the hill. It was built in 1937.
The top is at 732 m above sea level. The distance is 642 m and the altitude difference is 148 m. One carriage can transport 50 people to the top in about 3 minutes.
Opening hours 10.00-19.00. Adult tickets 10 zł, reduced 7 zł. On the slopes of the mountain there is a bobsleigh course for professional use only and a shorter, open all year round, sleigh tour for everyone.
MON-THU 10.00-15.00; FRI-SUN 10.00-18.00, ticket 6 zł (10 tour carnet 40 zł). The children will enjoy the ‘Winnie The Pooh Slope' which offers many attractions for these younger snow enthusiasts.
